Summer Associate Program


Many considerations play into your decision regarding the law firm you will join for the summer. Among them are the culture and congeniality of the office environment, the variety of available work assignments, and opportunities for growth and development, both personally and professionally. Greensfelder’s 10 week Summer Associate Program has a history of success meeting and exceeding our Summer Associates’ expectations in these arenas.

Greensfelder commits a significant amount of resources and effort to conduct a high quality Summer Associate Program. We provide our Summer Associates challenging assignments, designed to expose them to the wide range of our Firm’s practice. Generally, Summer Associates who have completed their second year of law school are assigned to a specific Practice Group, and receive work assignments from attorneys in that group. On the other hand, Summer Associates who have completed their first year of law school are typically part of our “General Pool.” Those Summer Associates will receive work from a variety of Practice Groups, so they have the opportunity to explore those areas of law that might appeal to them most. Certainly, we value the ability to deliver accurate and concise research memoranda; however, also we believe our Summer Associates should learn to address the practical problems our clients face. We consider our Summer Associates to be more than just students who are working at the firm temporarily - they become involved in the daily fabric of our practice, and are encouraged to become a part of the Greensfelder team. Typically, our Summer Associates enjoy the opportunity to interact with clients, under the guidance of our experienced attorneys. They also attend meetings, depositions, hearings, and closings, side-by-side with the attorneys they work with. In short, by the end of a summer, our Summer Associates have an accurate and thorough picture of what it is like to practice law as an associate at Greensfelder.

And what would summer be without a little fun? We encourage our Summer Associates to get to know us outside the work setting as well. Walk across the street to Busch Stadium to help us cheer the Cardinals on to victory, participate in an evening of Demolition Ball and Laser Tag, volunteer with us at Food Outreach or Habitat for Humanity, take in the sights and sounds of the St. Louis Zoo in our private event area at “Jammin’ At The Zoo.”  St. Louis has much to offer and our Summer Program is designed to give you a taste of life in our metropolitan area.

Greensfelder’s attorneys are ready to help you on your road to success. Each of our Summer Associates is paired with an Associate “Mentor” as well as a member of the Recruiting Committee, to ensure that someone is always available to provide advice, act as a sounding board and guide the Summer Associate’s progress throughout the summer.

We recognize the value of meaningful feedback with respect to your work product and progress. We strive to provide numerous opportunities in this regard, both informally - through the comments and evaluation of the assigning attorney as projects are completed, and formally - through two scheduled reviews. Additionally, our “open door” policy encourages informal interaction between Summer Associates and the attorneys with whom they work. Summer Associates regularly work with Practice Group Managers and other senior level attorneys within the Firm, creating further opportunities for learning and growth.

In addition to development of our Summer Associates’ legal skills, the Summer Associate Program at Greensfelder affords Summer Associates opportunities to participate in weekly meetings with senior officers of the Firm, covering topics which include client relationships, marketing, Firm history and future goals, as well as a brief overview of the function of each of the Firm’s Practice Groups.
